Identity tells everything about you. It can explain why a person does certain things and behaves a certain way. Sigmund Freud came up with a theory of personality known as the psychosexual stages of development. This includes the id which is the pleasure principle, the ego, the reality principle, and the conscience, presenting guilt, shame, or pride. People want to listen to their id, but it's best to follow your ego. Another theory was Erik Erikson's Eight Stages of Man. This theory represents each stage of life during a psychosocial crisis. These stages are very accurate and can cause problems if they aren't resolved before moving onto the next stage.
As a child and even a teenager, I can easily remember wanting to do things that I wasn't supposed to do (my id), but not doing them because I didn't want to get in trouble (my ego). If I did happen to slip up and do wrong, I always had a shameful conscience for breaking the rules.
I think that knowing these theories, especially Freud's personality theory, will help me to know that a child has done something wrong if I can tell that they are feeling guilty or shameful. I can explain to them that I know they want something or want to do something, but it just might not be appropriate at the time. I will be able to teach my students the reality of things and what happens when they break the rules.
