Gender is what we are socialized to accept. Sex is biologically what we are. Albert Bandura's social learning theory says that we learn our gender roles by watching, learning, and copying the people around us. For example: girls might see their mom always cooking dinner and never their dad, so they will think that women are supposed to cook dinner.
As a child, I did always see my mom cook, clean, dress nice, and wear make up. So, of course that's what I thought I was supposed to do, and that's what I wanted to do. Even today, I love to clean and dress up and wear make up. Not to say men couldn't cook and clean too, but I do think it's mostly women that do it.
I think knowing gender role theories will help me as a teacher because it will allow me to know that not all kids will follow the typical gender roles. It will help me to let the children explore and do what they want. I can help them to decide what they prefer.
